Interview: Girls’ and women’s engagement in STEM training and professions in Latin America

While more girls come in college today, they don’t usually have equal opportunities to complete and reap the benefits of an training of these option. Biases, social norms and objectives influence the caliber of the training they get therefore the topics they learn, particularly when it comes to technology, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

Globally, just 35% of STEM pupils in degree are ladies and just 3% of females in advanced schooling choose information and communication technologies (ICT) studies, based on UNESCO’s report that is global the rule: Girls’ and women’s education in STEM.

This Q&A was conducted with Gloria Bonder, coordinator of this UNESCO Regional Chair on Women, Science and tech in Latin America, prior to the International for Girls and Women in Science day.

What’s the landscape that is current of equality in science, technology and innovation (STI) fields when you look at the Latin American region?

In Latin America, 45% of this region’s researchers are females, lots far surpassing the international price of 28%.
